Install it directly. No app store in the middle.
The Android app is distributed straight from this site rather than through the Play Store — the same principle as the rest of Knowledge Commons: no intermediary between your organisation and its own tools. It runs on Android 8.0 and later, on phones and tablets alike.
Tap Download for Android above on the device itself, then open the downloaded file. Android will ask whether to allow your browser to install unknown apps — allow it, confirm the install, and sign in with your usual account. Grant the microphone permission when prompted, and allow notifications: the recording notification is what keeps capture running when the screen is off.
Updates take care of themselves. The app checks for a new version each time it starts and offers to install it — so this page is only needed for the first install. Every update is signed with the same key, so it installs over the top and keeps your session and any queued recordings.

The meetings that happen on a screen.
Most conversations worth keeping no longer happen around a table. The Mac recorder captures the audio playing on your desktop and your microphone at once, mixed into a single recording — so a video call is captured in full, both halves, without a second device in the room or a bot joining the meeting.
Choose the project it belongs to and name the meeting before you start, and audio is uploaded as it is captured rather than in one lump at the end. By the time a call finishes, most of it has already been transcribed. It runs on macOS 14 and later, on Apple Silicon and Intel alike.
Signed and notarised by Apple, so it opens like any other app — no security warnings, no right-click workaround. On first launch macOS asks for Screen Recording permission, which is what desktop audio capture requires; grant it and reopen the app, as that permission only takes effect on restart.
Capture in the field
For the conversations a hardware recorder can’t reach.
Not every important conversation happens at a table with a recorder on it. The companion app lets your people capture from wherever they are — interviews, site visits, the moment something matters — tagged to the same Project → Session → Round → Group structure as everything else.
Recordings are captured on the device and uploaded to your Knowledge Commons server, where they flow into the very same pipeline as hardware-recorder audio: transcription, attribution, and the living knowledge graph. Audio is chunked and uploaded as it is captured, and the queue survives the app being closed — a dropped signal delays an upload, it doesn’t lose it.
Same destination, different door. Whether audio comes from the Recorders or from a phone in the field, it lands in one place — your server — and becomes part of one shared intelligence.
The Feed and the Wiki
Not just captured — participatory.
The app gives your team a live Feed into the project: a running view of what’s being contributed, with votes, comments, and feedback on the knowledge base itself. Alongside it sit the project wiki and the visual concept map, so the commons is readable from the field and not only from a desk. The commons stops being something a few people build and everyone else reads — it becomes something the whole team shapes as it grows.

Coming to iPhone and iPad.
The iOS companion covers the same ground — field recording, remote control of the hardware recorders, the Feed and the wiki — and is moving through internal testing. Apple’s distribution rules mean it arrives by invitation rather than by direct download.

The obvious question about a mobile capture app is “where does my audio go?” The answer is the same as the rest of Knowledge Commons: to your own server, on your own infrastructure — not a vendor cloud, not someone else’s data centre. Encrypted in transit and at rest, syncing only to the environment you control.
